Hearing that detailed Bradley’s torture closes

December 12, 2012. By the Bradley Manning Support Network. Closing arguments were made yesterday in the hearing on the unlawful pretrial punishment of Bradley Manning. The defense contended that the influence of a three-star general broke down the chain of command, allowing those responsible for Bradley Manning to treat him ‘like a zoo animal’ while the prosecution argued that while Bradley was not treated normally, the actions of Quantico officers were simply ‘cautious.’

Live from Ft. Meade: courtroom updates, 12/11/12

December 10, 2012. By Nathan Fuller. As this Article 13 comes to a close, after the witness portion concluded yesterday, the defense and government will make their closing arguments. Yesterday, Brig Commander Denise Barnes testified about removing Bradley Manning’s underwear, and his Army Captain Joe Casamatta testified that he was never told about psychiatrists’ recommending normal treatment. We’ll update this post during court recesses with updates as the day progresses.

Quantico staff denied outsiders facts on Bradley Manning’s treatment

December 10, 2012. By Nathan Fuller. Four witnesses today and their contrasting testimony reveal a Quantico brig staff more interested in appearances of legal compliance than Bradley’s human rights. The witness portion of this Article 13 motion is done, and tomorrow parties will make their closing arguments. Stay tuned for coverage of the rest of the hearing to hold the military account for Bradley’s abuse.

Update 12/10/12: Bradley Manning is the Guardian’s 2012 Person of the Year, and the NYT finally appears in court to cover the trial.

Bradley Manning, the heroic whistle-blower who exposed war crimes through WikiLeaks, has won the Guardian’s Person of the Year 2012. He received an astounding 70% of the vote, revealing an incredible amount of public support. And finally, the New York Times after a long year of silence, has sent a reporter to cover the trial, yet many are critical that he left after an hour.

Bradley Manning punished for charges before trial

December 6, 2012. By Nathan Fuller. Brig commander CWO James Averhart testified all day in Ft. Meade, MD, about his role in keeping Bradley Manning on senselessly abusive conditions. He is the first to stress that Bradley’s charges put him at risk in Quantico and therefore warranted restrictive treatment. Tomorrow, his replacement, CWO Barnes, will testify.

Happy Birthday Bradley! Write him a letter of support!

December 6, 2012. By the Bradley Manning Support Network. Military whistle-blower Bradley Manning will turn 25 on December 17th. It will be his third birthday in prison, and by the time his court martial begins it will have been almost three years: one year of which in the Quantico marine brig, where he was held in solitary confinement against the recommendations of mental health professionals. His trial is scheduled to start next March, but he still needs our support. Please take a few minutes to send Bradley a birthday message.

Bradley Manning’s brig staff violated Navy rules

After a two-day break, PFC Bradley Manning’s Article 13 motion continued, with Marines corrections expert Abel Galaviz testifying about the various ways in which the Quantico Marine brig violated Navy regulations in the way it maintained Bradley’s confinement. Tomorrow, brig commander James Averhart will take the stand.

December 4, 2012. By Nathan Fuller. MSGT Craig Blenis, a Gunnery Sergeant at Quantico until it closed, was Bradley Manning’s counselor at the brig. Pressured from his superiors and fearing media scrutiny. Blenis kept Bradley in restrictive conditions for nine long months, against psychiatrists’ recommendations. Bradley’s hearing continues at Ft. Meade December 5-7, and then December 10-12.

Update 12/4/12: Report on first presentation by Bradley’s attorney David Coombs, more support for whistleblowers

Reports from the Dec. 3rd presentation by Bradley’s attorney who made his first public statements since the trial began. He discussed the unlawful pretrial confinement of Bradley Manning, as well as Bradley’s hopes for the future. Bradley Manning has spent over 920 days in prison without trial, and support for whistle-blowers continues to grow.
