Update 9/14/11: Dinner party success, WikiLeaks updates, Ann Wright and Michael Moore voice support

Last Friday and Saturday we asked supporters everywhere to host dinner parties in PFC Bradley Manning’s honor. Our efforts were successful, as over 60 parties were registered around the world, including 20 different U.S. states and 10 different countries. Thousands of dollars were raised thanks to our hosts’ efforts.

The Associated Press published an important article this week, in which they discussed findings of a survey they performed after the release of unredacted U.S. State Department Cables. They reported that of the sources they spoke with whose name had been released, they did not feel put at serious risk. Furthermore, they confirmed that thus far there have been no allegations of individuals being harmed as a result of this information being made public. Glenn Greenwald discusses AP’s findings further here.

While some diplomats have voiced concern that the release of this information will make people less likely to discuss sensitive matters frankly with U.S. Diplomats, there can be little denying that publicizing the WikiLeaks revelations has enabled public debate over the policies that affect so many. One chilling revelation involved a case in which the U.S. State Department sought to suppress facts about an incident in which 5 Iraqi children under the age of 5 were handcuffed and executed by U.S. troops.

Ex-State Department spokesperson P.J. Crowley, who was forced to resign after calling Bradley’s treatment at Quantico “ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid,” says he still stands by his words.

Retired diplomat and Army colonel Ann Wright, who resigned in response to the invasion of Iraq, has just published an article in independent military journal Stars and Stripes, in which she argues that Bradley should be honored, no punished, and she calls for an end to excessive government secrecy.

Finally, filmmaker Michael Moore, staunch advocate for Bradley Manning, made a public statement for Bradley at the opening event for the release of his new book.

  1. Right now the excessive gov’t security is mostly covering up our outrageous acts of global imperialism and resource theft. War, as far as this country boy is concerned, is aimed like a gun by unrestrained capitalist thieves and the cannon fodder are our young people. The target is those who stand in the way of predatory capitalists.
