Free Bradley Manning Actions in Minneapolis

An update from Melissa Hill:

Our Minneapolis group continues to hold regular events to raise awareness of Bradley Manning’s imprisonment. We also use it to share Wikileaks DVD that included not only the Collateral Murder videos but also the recent Cablegate releases, the Afghan War Diaries and Iraq War Diaries along with the mysterious Insurance file.

For three weeks in a row, we showed up outside of Senator Amy Klobuchar’s local office in Minneapolis to deliver a DVD with the updated Wikileaks documents after her request on a local radio station to force Wikileaks to “take the documents” off the site and her support of keeping Bradley Manning in prison for life. We had to respond not just with a phone call or letter.

Besides delivering Wikileaks DVDs and documents to the Senator’s staff, we found that this office is an ideal location to hold signs during rush hour downtown traffic and hand out at least a few DVDs and Free Bradley Manning flyers those walking by in the cold weather.

Our last event, we had a large snowbank after a record-setting blizzard that helped us hold signs up and provided a great platform to stand on to wave at the cars stuck in slow traffic.

A few of us ventured out to DC last week too – and some of those Wikileaks DVDs ended up on the White House lawn during the massive civil resistance lead by Veterans for Peace. Approximately 132 people were arrested as they spoke out against the wars of occupation and also called for the release of political prisoners such as Bradley Manning.

  1. Bradley Manning has done nothing wrong. How can you heartlessly keep him imprisoned in solitary confinement, a form of torture? He deserves his freedom. Please do the right thing. Thank you.

  2. I’m willing to get involved in the Cities with advocacy for Manning, but “Free Bradley” isn’t the message that will get me outside to hold a sign. Besides being terribly cliche and Utopian, it is nowhere near the importance and immediacy of improving the conditions of his detention. Specifically, getting the POI lifted. Even this will take a tremendous effort, but it is possible. A smart course of action would be to work with a possibly sympathetic Congressman like Keith Ellison to put pressure on the military to treat Manning humanely.

If anyone would like to work on this, you can find my email on my blog, linked here.

  3. Our next event will be on Jan. 3rd if you are in the Twin Cities area,
    Date: Monday, January 3, 2011
    Time: 4:30-5:30 pm
    Where: Senator Klobuchar’s Office
    1200 Washington Ave. S. Minneapolis
    facebook event: http://www.facebook.com/event.html?eid=178451355509466

@Mark – I’ve contacted Ellison but haven’t gotten a response yet about these issues including including asking him to pressure that the POI be lifted so besides the outdoor rallies – there are other things that people are doing locally behind the scenes.
